With today’s economic woes, people are more and more concerned about fuel costs, the increasing cost of groceries, increasing costs of utilities, education costs and job security. In addition, the government bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and another major investment bank failure adds more worry into the mix. Even through the doom and gloom economy, credit union’s continue to shine.

During these troubled economic times, credit unions have reinforced their importance. As unique, member-owned, cooperative institutions, credit unions are viewed as vital institutions that promote savings and provide loans at affordable rates. Not to mention that you get a real person at the other end of the phone with exceptional service as well as compassionate care.

The Louise E.Mills FCU is here to stay. We are here for all your family/financial needs and we are safe and secure. We know our members trust us with their money and you know we are here for your financial stability. We did not contribute to the subprime lending crisis and we are able to help people deal with the aftermath of the fallout from this crisis.

A lesson we can learn from the subprime mortgage crisis is the need for financial literacy at all levels. The concept of teaching people the value of consistent savings and the use of credit wisely was Louise E. Mills main goal in starting this credit union. Those of you who were around when Louise was remember the running commentary about how difficult it was to get YOUR money withdrawn from the credit union as she made some kind of compromise with you as she held onto your check before releasing it!

With the difficulties of today’s economy, Louise’s values reiterate the growing importance for financial literacy as all of us struggle to manage our finances. The impact of bad financial decisions due to a lack of understanding is what caused the subprime disaster. Since 1963 we have been a valuable resource for education and counseling of your financial needs. As a cooperative, member-owned financial institution, we are dedicated to your financial wellbeing.

We have reached out to the schools to help them with financial literacy programs in order to educate our youth. We have designed the Teen Pride program to help teenagers with all their financial needs. This program allows us to introduce young adults safely into financial services before they get inundated with solicitations for credit cards and other financial services and products. As a result of this education, young adults will be able to make informed and beneficial choices. Ideally, we would like children to partner with their parents and teachers to be mentors for their students.

Please remember that even when you leave the field of membership you remain a member. Once a member, always a member. Your entire family can become members. We are always updating our technology to better serve you. Your comments are always welcome so that we are able to provide you with the services you need. Please see our website as we continue to make changes and updates. The links page is very informative with educational links for students and teachers. Please feel free to call me any time as I am happy to help in any way. I look forward to hearing from you! Warm regards, Heather M. Hull-Colby, CFO
